Them, scholars :
We decided to open a program in Alegria Municipality, south Cebu, because these areas are often overlooked by NGOs as poverty is not as obvious as in cities. The population lives mostly of subsistence farming. They rarely have access to cash payments. It is therefore very difficult for many to cope with a number of expenses, in particular school-related costs for their children, and especially in high-school.
In order to get to school, children often have no other option but to walk (sometimes more than 40 minutes). In many cases, children from the poorest families do not have the necessary means to pay for transportation or for living arrangements near their place of study.
You, sponsor :
We propose you to support 5 high-school students from Alegria:
Lenny, grade 11, with 5 siblings. Her father is a carpenter and her mother is a farmer, but their harvest is just enough for the family’s consumption.
Britt Jamley, grade 10, with 3 siblings. His father is a company driver earning minimum wage, and his mother is a house wife.
Rose Laarni, grade 10, with 4 siblings. Her father is a farmer and her mother has a sari-sari store. They are living far away in the mountains.
Arvie, grade 12, with 4 siblings. His father is a farmer and drives a habal-habal from time to time to earn extra money, his mother is helping him in the farm.
Jayson, grade 12, with 7 siblings. Both his parents are farmers without a fixed income.
These 5 children are all passionate about school, they never miss a class day. They are the first ones in their families who will be able to graduate from Senior High School and they are dreaming of becoming College graduates.
